Turkey: The Fund Launches Campaign for Emergency Earthquake Response

Urgent Appeal: Earthquakes in Turkey

In response to two catastrophic earthquakes that struck Turkey on February 6, 2023, the Fund for Global Human Rights is launching an emergency fundraising campaign to bolster support for our grantees in the region.

All donations will directly help 20 local human rights groups provide lifesaving support and protect the rights of marginalized or vulnerable people affected by the earthquakes.

The activists we support in Turkey serve communities who face systemic inequality and injustice, such as migrants and refugees. Turkey hosts more refugees than any other country in the world, including 3.6 million people displaced by the conflict in neighboring Syria. Refugees in Turkey face legal limbo, administrative red tape, and social ostracization—and they’re often overlooked or excluded from government services.

Local human rights defenders—like those supported by the Fund—are best placed to respond to the immediate needs of their communities. Amid the widespread destruction caused by these devastating earthquakes, Fund grantees are prepared to deliver lifesaving assistance, including critical aid and services, and to address the rise in sexual violence and human rights abuses that frequently occur in the aftermath of disasters.

In this moment of crisis, local human rights defenders are the only way to guarantee that no one is left behind in the response and rebuilding efforts. By filling gaps in service provision and pressing the Turkish government to meet its obligations to affected communities, Fund grantees are ensuring that the recovery is sustainable, equitable, and effective.

Donate now to support disaster relief. 100 percent of donations will go directly to local human rights groups in Turkey. Any funds that are not deployed immediately will be redirected to emergency support for Fund grantees facing threats.
