As the world reckons with the results of the U.S. elections, the Fund for Global Human Rights is committed to continuing our mission: to protect and promote human rights everywhere. Gabriela Bucher, our president and CEO, shares her reflections and a message of hope.
Dear Fund Community,
Like so many people, we at the Fund for Global Human Rights are wrestling with what the presidential election result means for people in the United States as well as those around the world who are affected by U.S. foreign policy.
While we’re still working to process and learn from this event, we can assure you that one thing remains constant and even affirmed: our belief in the power and resilience of social movements to achieve lasting change. Having supported this work internationally for more than 20 years, we take great inspiration from our colleagues and grantee partners who have dedicated their lives to making the world a fairer and more just place in the face of great opposition, harassment, and violence.
Time and time again, when faced with dark times, grassroots activism has lit the way. From the Me Too and Black Lives Matter movements in the United States to the successful community-led campaigns to decriminalize abortion in Mexico, we know that sustained human rights efforts work.
Alongside these relatively high-profile struggles for justice are many more activists effecting change. Far from the media spotlight, they toil tirelessly to realize a progressive vision of the world we collectively want to inhabit.
This election result must not stop the clock on our hope or our vision. We will remain steadfast in our mission to support the courageous and often unheralded activists pursuing systemic change to protect our shared futures.
