Nefertiti’s Story
Nefertiti came to Turkey alone after an arduous journey from Morocco. Driven from her home by anti-trans discrimination, Nefertiti sought greater acceptance and protection in a new country. Her experience is like that of many other LGBTQ+ refugees and migrants.
She journeyed across borders with few belongings and little support, desperate for a new life in a more accepting society. Nefertiti describes Morocco as a “nightmare” for LGBTQ+ people, but life in Turkey is often difficult. LGBTQ+ refugees like Nefertiti face both anti-LGBTQ+ and anti-migrant bias. Nefertiti continues to face violence and discrimination in her everyday life, but she has found a supportive community and a profound sense of belonging with a group of LGBTQ+ rights volunteers. Nefertiti’s bravery is inspiring others like her to find hope in an otherwise unwelcoming place.
