Altaf – Supporting Refugees and Migrants
On Altaf’s twelfth birthday, she made an impossible decision. After facing rejection from her family for being transgender, she boarded a plane to Turkey, leaving behind her home in Syria and everything she knew.
On her own in Istanbul, she found shelter, a job cleaning bathrooms, and activists who offered support and community. A decade later, Altaf has completed university and dedicated her life to helping fellow LGBTQ+ refugees and migrants. She helps them access medical care and psychosocial services, provides support with asylum applications, and makes them feel like they are part of a community in a country where homophobia is rampant, and where migrants are often unwelcome.
Altaf is a local hero, bringing vital help and hope to those who have fled persecution and poverty.
