Meeting the moment
Human Rights at 75
In 1948, the United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR)—the foundational document of the modern human rights movement.
The UDHR’s thirty fundamental rights and freedoms, enshrined in international law, continue to inspire activists and human rights defenders today.
But 75 years later, states and international institutions are failing to deliver on the promise of the UDHR. And across the globe, authoritarian governments and corrupt corporate interests are trying to undermine decades of progress.
We believe in the power and the potential of the declaration. But to realize its vision for a more just world, we must:
Redefine security and defend the defenders
No one should be jailed or killed for exercising their fundamental rights. We need a new approach to security that focuses on the things that truly make us safe, and centers the wellbeing of women, migrants, LGBTQ+ groups, Indigenous people and other marginalized communities.
Demand Climate Justice
There can be no human rights without climate justice, and no climate justice without human rights. By working together, and centering communities on the front lines, we can create sustainable, equitable solutions to tackle the climate crisis.
Build a new economy that works for all
Economic justice is central to human rights. By radically reimagining our current economic system, we can meet the needs of everyone rather than rewarding the privileged few.
Shift Power to the Grassroots
Community activists are on the front lines of the fight for human rights. Through flexible funding and trust-based partnerships, we can make sure they have the money, tools, and resources to succeed.
Innovate for the Future
Activism and advocacy are evolving to meet the challenges of the twenty-first century. By experimenting and taking bold risks, we can foster the next generation of human rights leaders.
