Marcelina’s Story

When Marcelina was just 14, she her home and schooling to become a domestic worker in Mexico City. Frustrated by the poor working conditions she and her colleagues experienced every day, Marcelina created the country’s first union for domestic workers, Centro de Apoyo para Empleadas del Hogar (CACEH).

Marcelina began recruiting more workers who were also fed up with abuse and exploitation. Their power grew. In 2019, CACEH pushed lawmakers to ensure employers gave domestic workers contracts, paid leave, and other critical labor rights. And in October 2022, CACEH successfully lobbied for a new law mandating social security for all domestic workers.
